KDE or GNOME, why?
I have finally got hold of an up to date version of linux (Mandrake9)
And i have done 2 installs the first i installed it with KDE and then GNOME
before that i had never used KDE although i had installed it and had a quick look, in the past i have been using RH7.2 with GNOME and loved it!
Now i know this might be quite a hard question to answer thats why i have asked for everyones opinions on: Which you like KDE or GNOME and why? (if you use another wm what is it and why do you choose it?) i just want to try to get an overall feel for them so i can make the "best average guess" on what i want to use.
cheers

I quite liked gnome in RH7.2
The reasons for it may seem silly and they probably are because all the wm's are highly customizable, but i liked the way i could have my panel at the bottom of the screen sorta floating there with only the pixel map (thats probably the main thing)
when i installed Mandy 9 with both gnome and kde i wouldnt get the pixel map thing. (this seems rather trivial, but isnt it these small things that make it feel like home?)
I was really happy with both wm, they were both a hell of a lot faster than with RH7.2 !
that should get this started!

personally i like neither kde nor gnome. both are extremely bloated. i've been using fluxbox and in the past have used blackbox and windowmaker. they are very minimalist and allow for semi easy customization. also i like fvwm however i don't use it very often.

KDE is like Gnome except a little more options. Personally, I use Blackbox I think its better. Try it if you want http://blackboxwm.sourceforge.net/

Thats just it i dont like the bloatedness of both gnome and kde!
And if you guys are willing to stand by blackbox, well then i am definetely willing to give it a good hard go!, besides it will be a bit of fun. I have had a look at the website and at a whole lot of screenshots and i have to say i like what i see
I noticed the download for the latest stable version 0.65.0 is only 287kb (which i also like! only 56kbps here!)
I understand i require a c++ compiler to install it? what should i use? or is there some place which will give me instructions? (sorry for being a pain, I'm new to this)
Once i have it all installed should i remove kde somehow? (how do i do that?)
cheers for all your help! once again

Would anyone care to enlighten me? I have a few questions concerning wm's:
how does it all work? when i install blackbox, is kde still there? or do i get rid of it? (please say i get rid of it) also what will i be using for say a file manager? (i really dont like konqueror! it messes around and gets me frustrated!)
I suppose what i am getting at is, I like the speed and all of mandy 9, but i really dont like kde with all its bloated stuff same goes with gnome (blackbox looks to be a whole lot better)

the thing with konqueror i am talking about is, well one thing when i click on the /mnt directory it just hangs!
so i end up having to minimise the b**ch and wait for it to dissapear (i know i could kill the thing but thats something i dont want to have to do everytime!)
also something else, using gnome with RH7.2 I had no trouble copying from my cdroms at the same time into a directory on my hdd but now with mandy 9 and konqueror no way will it allow this (it just goes all screwy and hangs and stuff) . Now i dont know if this problem is directly linked to konqueror (but its my main suspect!) all i know is this didnt happen with RH7.2 and nautilis.
sorry about all the posts by me, hopefully you guys will take the time to read the ones above. (I seem to be in the wrong timezone! gmt+12.00)
