try to start kde with command
startx

dont forget to modify ~/.xinitrc to start KDE (forexample leave in it single line: startkde)

BTW those errors means that programs in startkde script could not find X-server.

startx is not working either. It gives basicly the error messages about display "". It seems like $DISPLAY is a variable that must be set.
I've just started playing with linux. So where do I find xinitrc?

if startx does not work then check if X work at all.
(.xinitrc is in your home directory, but befor configure X-server)
X -- will start X u should see a graphic screen with a lot of dots if all right.
If X does not work, u should configure it.
There are several ways to do it. I prefer to use xf86config program, but there are a lot of other programs of such kind.
SAX, forexample.
