I just downloaded all the rpms for KDE 3.1.1. I then installed them. I logged out and when i try to log back into KDE, it says KDE cannot be started. KDEinit couldn't be started i think it says. Does anyone know how to fix this? KDE is all I usually use. I'm running Redhat 8.0. I had KDE 3.0.1 installed beforehand (from Redhat 8.0 cd)
I've tried to install KDE 3.1.1 on my RH 8, but I've many problems of dependences. Can You explain the steps to install it and from what windows manager You have done it?
Thx in advance, Marcello.
I installed it from KDE 3.0.1 (from Redhat CD). I downloaded all the 8.0 rpm's from their ftp site. I saved them all to a folder: /home/mark/Desktop/KDE. I then issued the command: rpm -Uvh /home/mark/Desktop/KDE/*.rpm
I had two dependencies - i forget what they were. But i used apt-get to solve these dependencies. I issued the same command again and the rpm's installed without error. But then i logged out and tried to log back in. It then says, "KDEinit could not be loaded". So, now i can't even use KDE.

Get apt-get. Then run
apt-get update
apt-get install kde
apt-get upgrade
Worked for me. Apt-get fixed all sorts of dependancy problems for me as well. It's worth a shot. Go to apt.freshrpms.org to download apt, I think. Good luck.
