I'd like to setup my Gnome desktop to be able to input Japanese and Chinese text in English locale. The IIIMF that comes with the Fedora Core 2 distro looked fine, so I added the Gimlet input method switcher to the toolbar, and added Japanese and Simplified Chinese as additional input languages.

It works, but there are a few things that make it uncomfortable.[list=1][*]Gimlet should be able to switch between languages with Ctrl-SPC, but it doesn't work - and even if it worked, I'd like to reconfigure it in order not to get mingled with emacs (I know about C-@, but I like C-SPC...). It would be the best if I could create specific keyboard shortcuts for English, Japanese and Chinese input.[*]A "European" input method appeared, which seems to differ from standard English input only in the fact that I cannot enter spaces or punctuation marks. Gimlet randomly switches to this method when I go between virtual desktops... anyone with the same problem? Japanese (canna?) input also does it sometimes, these may be connected somehow.[*]The standard simplified Chinese input (chinput?) isn't very bright, though it learns fast :) I wonder if I can tell IIIMF to use another program - like scim or xcin or fcitx (which is the best?).[/list=1]
