Is gdisk actually working? I am installing arch Linux and using gdisk.

Is gdisk actually working? I am installing arch Linux and using gdisk. I am a newbie to arch (installing for the first time) and using http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-1...inux-uefi.html as well as the arch wiki to install. I am confused while using gdisk. I have already ran gdisk /dev/sda. Apparently mbr is in protective mode with gpt avaolable (according to gdisk) Next I am supposed to do "o" to create a new guid table. But after I entered "o", I get the terminal saying that this will create a new protected MBR. I thought that I was creating something for gpt? Because I am using uefi.

Thanks for anyone's help in understanding gdisk.

i installed arch linux several times, and i use only the beginners' guide.

one thing i usually do, though, is to partition the disk before i start with the archlinux install process.

any linux live bootable medium will do for that.
i use the gparted application which is usually already installed.
i have never used gdisk.
i don't know about uefi, though!

If you are contemplating Arch you'd better be prepared to read and understand the doco.
Kudos for asking.

Go here and start reading. Consider making a contribution.
FWIW I keep a spare machine I can trash so I learn what happens when I do things I may not understand. Aids no end in learning.

Thanks for the quick replies! I am diving deeper into Linux (used Ubuntu and fedora for the longest time but want a little more). And I am a little paranoid because of Uefi, that's why I want to make sure this arch install is done right... One of my threads here: http://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...s-1071082.html . @syg00: helpful gpt guide! I haven't found the answer to my question yet but will keep searching.

gpt always requires a protected MBR to dissuade software that doesn't understand gpt from updating the disk (it looks fully allocated).

No need to do the "o" - simply delete existing partitions, and allocate new.

Thanks for the reply! That, and "(parted) /dev/sda print" answered my question.
