Question Internet connection-a problem

Hi everybody,

As I am a really newbie, I wasted so much time understanding how to connect internet via Linux. I am using GNOME, but also have an option for KDE. When I try it using "internet connection wizard" in GNOME, it says "no modem found". But I have a modem perfectly working in windows in the same machine.
I have Linux 7.3, hard drive is partitioned to use windows and Linux both. Internet connectionis fine in windows.

Please help.

Model of modem (most likely a winmodem, which is the source of the problem)? Distribution of linux?

If you do a search on here for "winmodem" you'll find some help on using modems such as yours

Hi Bhusal

General advice regarding Linux and Modems
  • The typical modem in many peoples desktop computer is an Internal PCI Software modem - these modems require software to emulate what the hardware modems do naturally - because of market share etc most manufacturers only create Windows drivers for these popular modems - you can get Linux drivers for some of these modems but they are few and far between and still present configuration problems.
  • The best option for getting your Linux distribution on the internet is to use an External Serial modem - these are easy to configure

The modem you use under Windows is probably a PCI Software modem - when you installed it you probably installed some drivers to enbale Windows to communicate with it.

As I said before, getting the right Linux driver for these modems is not easy and even if you do there still can be problems.

Your safest bet would be any external serial modem.

Bhusal:

Could you please tell me your modem's manufacturer/model details?
Mine was Conexant one(a winmodem) and I managed to find a driver at www.linuxant.com

Sumit.

Hey Bhusal!

In your previous e-mail you had mentioned that you modem was a Conexant HSF V.92 56K modem. I checked linuxant.com and yes they don't support the V.92 modulation. But I still think that you should go ahead and try to install it.
You will find the driver at http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/install.html

Please follow the instructions carefully and make sure you choose the right driver for your OS/kernel.
Please inform me on whether it worked (or not!).

All The best,
Sumit.
