If you downloaded a tarball, there is usually some files in them called INSTALL and README. I would suggest you read those as it can vary a bit how to install various packages. Also I seem to remember that there are usually a link to an install guide on the page you downloaded it from on kde-look.

of course there is a link beside the download link that teach us how to install that theme in rpms.
unfortunately it provides tar.gz file to download.
they dont teach how to compile and then load the theme in my KDE desktop v3.1.2.

i'm using Redhat 9. and the files that i have downloaded is this one:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=7559

Can anyone guide me on how to compile this stuff and then guide on how to get apply onto my desktop enviroment

Unzip the file, run ./compile, then make, then (as root) make install. These instructions assume there is no install file, 'cos if there is just type (as root) ./install

No different really to any other install.

Incidentally, KDE 3.2 looks amazing.

That is not correct.
First of all the file is not a .zip file but a .tar.gz file. I am using mandrake 9.1 and in kde I can right click the file and click on "extract here". I am sure you can use this option i red hat also. If not read about extracting tar.gz files.
When uncompressed , open a console to the directory where you have the uncompressed files and type
./configure --prefix=/path/to/kdemain
(on mandrake it is ./configure --prefix=/usr , but II am sure it is different on red hat)
After ./configure completes successfully, type
make
then become root by typing
su
then password
then type
make install
if all that completes without errors then you can follow the instructions on the file about applying that style.

ok i go into the folder of extracted theme file from a tar.gz file
then i use this command
# ./configure

and everything seem to configured well until told me this :=

Good - your configure finished. Start make now

[root@localhost plastik-0.3.3]#

then i type
# make

and this is the output:-
[root@localhost plastik-0.3.3]# make
make all-recursive
make[1]: Entering directory `/soft/plastik-0.3.3'
Making all in style
make[2]: Entering directory `/soft/plastik-0.3.3/style'
make[2]: Nothing to be done for `all'.
make[2]: Leaving directory `/soft/plastik-0.3.3/style'
Making all in client

make[2]: Leaving directory `/soft/plastik-0.3.3'
make[1]: Leaving directory `/soft/plastik-0.3.3'
[root@localhost plastik-0.3.3]#

why there is many leaving directory? is this indecate that theres some error in it?
ok so i ignored it and do
# make install

this is the output:-

make[3]: Leaving directory `/soft/plastik-0.3.3/client'
make[2]: Leaving directory `/soft/plastik-0.3.3/client'
make[1]: Leaving directory `/soft/plastik-0.3.3/client'

make[2]: Leaving directory `/soft/plastik-0.3.3'

everything looks like it went smooth. It says "leaving directory" because it is finished in that directory and is moving on to the next directory to build there.
You should now see plastik in window decorations, styles, and wherever else it is suppossed to install to.
