installing 32 bit WAS on 64 bit linux

hi,
i am a total linux newbie coming from a windows/java background.

i have installed redhat linux es version 4 64 bit onto a shiney new amd 64 bit machine. All good.
i am attempting to install Webshphere Application Server, 32 bit distribution but get the following error:

Initializing InstallShield Wizard...

Searching for Java(tm) Virtual Machine...
.libgcc_s.so.1 must be installed for pthread_cancel to work
.......libgcc_s.so.1 must be installed for pthread_cancel to work

Unfortunately obtaining a 64bit release of WAS is not an option.

I have tried installing IBM's 64 bit JVM to no effect.

Can anyone tell me
1. Is it a futile excersise to install 32 software on 64 bit linux?
2. If not, any likely avenues to explore.

Thank you in anticipation,
- jerry

You need to install the 32-bit version of the required libgcc and maybe other libraries [in addition to the 64-bit version(s) installed];

Searching for Java(tm) Virtual Machine...
.libgcc_s.so.1 must be installed for pthread_cancel to work
.......libgcc_s.so.1 must be installed for pthread_cancel to work
