I think what Linux really needs is a gamer OS. Call it something like G-Unix or Gamix or something like that. Something that creates a standard for high-end multimedia hardware and software developers have a standard platform for. A friend of mine, my instructor and I were discussing this not too long ago. The discussion was that if Linux had as big of a gaming backing as Windows does, it would be more popular.

Because, really, if you think about, gaming and multimedia is probably about 85% of what drives the PC industry and its advancement. And Windows is so popular not simply because Bill Gates is a monopolizing control freak, but because Windows has actually created a standard in which for developers to build upon. Because of all the different flavors of Linux, it makes it more difficult for anybody to develop for to accomodate for all the different versions of Linux, one of the falls of a huge open-source platform. A standard for these multimedia applications would do away with that.

Most of the games that I've seen for Linux are all games that are old and have been open-sourced by the developers or are some kind of cheap remake. Would be nice to truly be able to see some of the new high-end graphical games coming out seen on a Linux desktop.

And as someone else had stated before in another thread, automation and user-friendliness would be great as well. Something for the average user still to be able to use.

Yes, I know, Linux is really for the hobbyists and the pro's and the uber-geeks. If I could, I would make it myself. But I'm simply not that good enough to do so yet.

Yeah, I may be a newbie, but my friends know what they were talking about. I just added on to the idea. This post is all ideally what was brought up that day.

User friendliness; maybe voice-driven programs are the ultimate user-friendliness.

well i've always had a idea, that linux is great cuzz of a comminuity of people working on it and doing what THEY want to it. i was think what if we applyed that same kinda thing to a 3d person shooter. it would be kick butt cuzz we have tons of people working on it. there would be differn't styles you could play. and if we had one really good FPS that windows can't get a hold of (its all in linux) and make live cds of the game (which would also be online) we could really get more people intrested in linux. i'm behind you 100% though i'm not much of a programer, i've been trying to learn linux programing but haven't found any good docs to learn it from. but i could be your beta tester. when it comes to linux i have one of the most uncompatable. i can also set up a small website too if you like. just call on me when you need me!

I don't think Linux should be made more user-friendly.
There are so many thick people in this world that need Microsoft to ask them "Are you sure?"
IMO linux is for people who know how to use computers; those who can't or don't wanna learn can bugger off and buy a Playstation.

well i know your suppost to goto http://slax.linux-live.org/ but when i went there i couldn't find any info on making my own cd. though on one fourm someone gave a link to that site and said they told you how to make your own live slacker cd.

also i haven't found any info yet on making my own knoppix cd, though i see it done all the time so i know its possible.

All you need is one of the isos and to burn it to cd. If you need help on that, go here.

i know how to burn its the part where you make the iso that i run into probs.

and should it be a slax live cd that i'm making? or a knoppix?

The pages I gave you are the slax pages. On the download link I gave you, the first link that says download will give you the iso to download. You then burn it to cd and you then have a slax cd.

Knoppix can be got from either www.linuxiso.org or www.knopper.net - you don't need to make an iso, merely download it and then burn it with your cd burning software. Instructions for burning are obtained by following the third link I gave.

Mandrake I think have a gamers pack - comes with Wine preinstalled and some other stuff.

They problem is, they'll bugger off and buy Windows.

Your line of thinking promotes the need for Microsoft. If I need to install an OS on my grandmother's computer, it has to be MS, because some people like you in the linux community don't want linux to be more friendly. So I've no choice but to pay MS, what else?. You're helping MS make money. There's a need out there, and you say "let's not meet that need- let someone else (MS) do it".

I can see where you're coming from there, but why can't people just learn to use computers properly from the start?
I understand the grandmother analogy, so maybe there should be distro's made for people who want to run their lives with a GUI.
I don't understand why everything has to be dumbed down (for example the plain english campaign (www.plainenglish.co.uk)) so that the masses can handle it.
