HP Deskjet - lpr garbage

I just installed an HP Deskjet 3820. When I try to print from any GUI, it works fine, but when I try to print something via lpr, it gives me a line of garbage and then spits out all the paper in my tray. That and is there any other way of printing an image file besides lpr? The default GUI image viewer doesn't have a print option.
