How to convert .mov (digital camera) to .avi??

I have some movies that I took with a Kodak digital camera that end with extension .mov. I want to convert these to .avi to import into Blender. I tried using gstreamer, but when I attempt to import, I get "error: the selected file is not a movie" or something close. How do I convert these files properly to .avi?

If you have the transcode programs installed you could try using "tc_probe" to determine what kind of files these .mov files are. It could be that .mov is short for .movie and is a Kodak format file that has nothing to do with apples .mov format.

Another option is to use mencoder. If it is a quicktime movie.
mencoder -ovc xvid -oac mp3lame input.mov -o output.AVI
