What's the best way of accessing a shared folder on Windows? I have a host PC with Windows and i have Ubuntu installed as guest in a virtual machine and i wanna be able to access files on Windows from Linux. I know Virtual Box has a share folder option but i'm not a fan of that, also is there anyway without making Windows viewable via network discovery. Would mapping the windows folder a Ubuntu folder. I wanna be able to share files from windows to Linux without any one else on the network accessing my files.
in settings on your VBox for that install, under "share folders" if you got it setup to get to your windows user/directories you should be able to navigate to wherever by clicking on that +(folder image) upper right hand side -> folder path->dropdown_list

That's the shared folder option in Virtual Box i said i din't wanna use, but i may have to.
that is the only way I know, unless you might look into ssh into your windows using your network might work. this I know nothing about, other that you got two OSes with network access so ssh should work. sftp etc. if yes, you have password security then. so no one but you.
But OP also said 'making Windows viewable via network discovery' - if you share a directory in Windows isn't it automatically discovered by all devices? I don't know. That was also my idea.
The good thing is that Windows 10 comes with built-in SSH server so SSH could be used to exchange files as someone has already suggested.
