how do I modify .mp3 information (artist/title)?

How do MP3 devices read artist and title information from .mp3 files? Is it all in the title or can you encode this information in when converting from .wav. Is lame the ultimate CD ripper (ie wav->mp3)?

It's in tags in the header of the mp3 file. There are programs to edit these tags, usually called something like mp3tagedit

Samsara

PS: Try this: http://easytag.sourceforge.net/

nice. thanks for info. I will try easy tag, but in xmms will 'view file info' do the trick? Will this permanently save that info to the header?

And just so you know those are called "ID3" tags, of which there are the condensed ID3v1 and the expanded ID3v2 types (v2 supercedes v1 in display modes)
