the run levels are links in folders rc0.d rc1.d and like that somewhere in /etc/rc.d or something
if you want to edit run level 3 go to rc3.d
there you find links that start with S (start) sometimes there are also K (kill) links
the S links are started in numerical order
if 2 have the same number they go alphabetically i think
do ls -l
and you see where the links point to startup scripts in init.d
your ethernet card is started by a network startup script
my initial guess is you network scrpt is already running at boot so you have to setup eth0
if you have done that you might need a setting in modprobe.conf for the new module to load automatically
can you load the new module as root by hand with modprobe and if so what is the output ?
what if the output of ifconfig ?
and is there anything in
dmesg | more
about eth0 ?
