You didn't answer this question yet.

You also seem unable to do any research for yourself or follow any suggestions previously posted by other lq members that know a LOT about Linux.

However for now try Debian https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd...64/iso-hybrid/ download and live boot the lxde iso file, you will boot into the lxde desktop. Log out and change the session to openbox and log back in. You will then see the desktop described in my first post.

Note until you install Debian no settings or other changes will be saved.

Also note: Debian is not really considered a beginner distro so it might not be easy to install.

edit: or you can try the gnome Debian version from that same link.

I think what most people are saying is that you can do this with almost any Linux distro.

On my Mint 18.3 MATE system, for example, I can choose to place nothing on the desktop. My MATE system panel at the bottom can be made to auto-hide, and my Cairo launcher at the top auto-hides anyway. Thus I see nothing on the desktop, apart from my pretty background, until I activate one of these two panels by mousing to the top or bottom, or launch a program.

What people are also saying is that although no distro may supply this out of the box (I have no idea whether they do or not to be honest), it can be very easily configured. Just find the launcher you want and implement it.

If you're going to take the attitude that you want something to be exactly so and you want it straight away without any effort at all, then Linux may not be the operating system for you.

not sure if that is a clarification question, but to be able to provide a helpful answer to the question as-is, there would need to be clarification questions

so to clarify, disabling/hiding as in the post means that anything visual is completely disabled/hidden

nothing means that nothing related to the 'desktop' shows on hover or in whicheveer

or to quote the post as-is,

Yes, hidden means completely hidden. All you can see is your desktop background. You only see either the panel or the launcher slide into view if you move the cursor to the extreme edge of the screen (you an configure which of the four sides of the screen you place each panel/launcher).

I'm beginning to think we've been taken for a ride.

Any Linux Newbie who knows nothing about Linux(as stated by his first post), that can tell a senior member that's been here since 08, that he doesn't know what he's talking about.....

I think https://twistedconservative.files.wo...e-troll-48.png

@ simplelinux

You are not helping yourself by bantering all over the place.

I do suggest that you read; https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...#faq_lqwelcome

Be sure to read the links at the bottom of the post, especially How to ask technical questions to get quality answers

That way you will have the means to form a good post that will help others to help you solve the issue(s) at hand.

You have not been forthwith by providing requested information. Your framing of a question and with disqualification as to who should respond does no one any help. Let alone allowing fellow members to render aid.

So, have you tried any distributions so far?

As Mill J advises...
Quote:
While there are distros that are like that out of the box, I'm going to second Frankbell's recommendation. Download something easy, like mint: https://linuxmint.com/ maybe download with the xfce desktop and live boot.
Have you tried Linux Mint? What exactly have you done to try and find the Linux distribution "you're looking for?"

Probably ALL versions of Linux can be configured to do and look the way you want, all the desktop distros have mail clients, numerous browsers, Office suites, text editors, video editing software, image manipulation programs, audio playing and editing software. You name it, Linux has it.

You wouldn't buy a car by supplying a list of attributes; engine size, transmission type, number of seats, colour, entertainment system, etc, you'd go round the dealers with your list and test drive some till you found something you liked.

Linux is like buying a car... Go and test drive a few distros till you find the one which suits your requirements and you like! Unlike buying a car, its free!

Sorry for the rant but some posts seem unanswerable.

Play Bonny!
