Help! - Sound and Window Manager troubles- KDE

Here's the deal:

When I log into KDE, I hear no startup and no KDE system sounds (either system or KDE apps).

I have checked all mixers and the KDE control panel, etc. The sounds supposedly set are the OGG files which play fine with Amarok. (all other sounds and media work fine)

However.....when I log into a second KDE session (say, my wife's user account) sounds work fine. You can hear them, play them, test them.

Along similar lines: I was trying out some other window managers like XFCE. When I was logged in as myself, I cannot get OpenOffice to run.

Again, it works fine in XFCE if I log in with my wife's account.

Seems like something in my User files is hosed? Any ideas?

Happy to post outputs or more detailed info.

It's MEPIS with KDE 3.3.1 on it. Just my account seems to have the problems.

Thanks in advance!

Update - Sound problem

OK: Problem one solved.

Somewhere I read to try deletin the home/.kde (hidden) folder. Did that. System sounds returned. Of course, I had to entirely reset panel and app prefs.

The sound returned but grainy and low quality. Running alsaconf in a terminal fixed that.

Still no joy on OpenOffice in XFCE; again, it runs fine from a different account login.

[SOLVED] Help on Sound and OOo in XFCE

OK. Got the OpenOffice fixed by running the setup program that was in the ~/OpenOffice.org folder. There is an option to repair the installation, which it did.

Oddly enough, it hung in the process, but after killing the process, it worked fine.

So, I've solved my own problems but perhaps this info will be useful to the next guy.
