Going Reiser

I'm currently running Slack 10 with ext3. I've installed it with reiserfs on a few other systems and I really noticed the performance difference. Of course, now I want this on my box.

I have two hard drives, a 30 gig at /var/www and a 12 gig with everything else. Lilo is installed in the MBR. Now I know I have to back everything up and reformat the drives, that isn't a problem. However, will it just work if I back everything up, set up the drives for reiserfs, and copy everything back? I would think that since Lilo is installed into the MBR I would have a problem there.

Has anyone done anything similar to this? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Zack

I don't see why it wouldn't work, although I haven't done it. You will have to change /etc/fstab to reflect the new filesystem, and make sure that you copy everything while preserving ownership and permissions. Good luck! If it doesn't work, you will just have a 45 minute re-install to do, so you don't have a lot to lose except desktop configuration/themes/etc.

As long as you use something like cp -a you can copy back and forth and it will work as before... But if you want to copy the root / partition obviously you'll need to boot a CD distro or whatever that has reiser compatibility.
