Ghost linux machine - snapshot of complete linux box

Hi,

Can someone guide me the easiest way to ghost RHEL machines. I am using RHEL3, RHEL4 and RHEL5.

Do they need to be running, or can you bring them down? If the latter, I'd just use dd, and you pipe it through a compression program if you want.
