getting modem output

I wanted to know if anyone knows hout to output the contents of a /dev device into a text file. without locking the device up. we have a machine that is set to recieve faxes and would like to see the information that is passed when it recieves a call to the modem.

Any ideas?

I don't know if it'll do you good but I used to use a prog called 'logserial' to capture ttys input to a log file (for call logging on a PBX). Maybe a bit of googling and re-writing would get you what you want?
