Fonts in X

In X I have a problem with fonts. They're big. Very big. IT makes things hard to read and annoying. Can anyone help me make the fonts smaller? Also, when I start wine it give a whole bunch of messages related to font aliases. How would I fix this problem? I'm running Debian Woody and X 4.2
