Fat32 in Linux

Hi... I had 80Gb hard disk. I have cutted in two partitions. The one of them is used to be for backups and only. The partition must be visible from all the pcs in the house (windows+Linux) so the correct answer is Samba, which i know very well.
Do u think that the partition type must be ext3 of vfat? I think that a fat32 parition may give better flexibility... because under certain circumsatces it can be accesible form a pc running w98.
What do u suggest?

The last column if the fdisk -l command what information provides? My partition is fat32 but still is viewable as Linux....
Thx a lot

If this share is running Linux, it doesn't matter what filesystem it really is as Samba would be the only way to access it from every PC in the house. Just cause its FAT32 doesn't automatically make it available to share since you using Linux.

Personally I would use EXT3 if this is going to be on a Linux only system, this way during a crash or the likes, Linux can easily repair the filesystem, etc. With a non-native Linux filesystem like fat32 on it, its not as easy.

I think it does make a difference. I notice when I copy windows files to a ext3 partition, there is a freak out on certain foldernames.

For example, copying the c:\windows never seems to work because the folder is actually c:\WINDOWS and the hidden case difference causes a copy to fail.

I agree... the only reason for thinking fat32 was the flexibilty to move t\your h/d to w98 system for viewing your data
