linux and fat32

well, i finally got redhat 7.2 and windows xp dual-booting comfortably. of course, they're on two separate hard drives. anyway, that's not quite my problem.

what i've done is given linux 10gb of a new 40gb drive and windows xp the remaining 30gb. i want to put my mp3s on the 30gb partition and have it read from linux. the 30gb is fat32. i found a patch program that required me to recompile the kernel for fat32 support in linux.

i was just wondering if this was possible in redhat, because the page i got the patch from said that you couldn't use it with redhat.

a better question: is there any other way to give linux fat32 support without recompiling the kernel? i have someone downloading mandrake for me as we speak, 56k isn't too good with isos.

if not, i could definitely use some help patching the kernel for fat32 support. thanks.

Linux will easily read any fat/fat32 partition. All you really need to do is mount it. The /etc/fstab file is where you would want to add it. You'll need to know the hda(#). Type fdisk -l /dev/hda and you will see all of the disks partition numbers. Then just edit /etc/fstab and add a line to this effect:

/dev/hda(?) /windows vfat defaults 1 0

I made up the /windows directory for the mount point. You'll have to create a directory of your own liking to use as the mount point.

Even easier is simply mount it manually every time :
mount /dev/hda(?) /mnt/win

Make sure you have a folder /mnt/win .

It may not me as effective, but a lot easier.
