Extending parttion into another drive

Is it possible if I am only using ext3 and no LVM or anything else to re-size the partition into another physical device? I am pretty sure the answer to this is no but I was still curious as I am facing a full 1tb disk and need to add a new drive and unsure how to do this due to shared folders existing on the old drive and no way to actually expand them without linking in new files or something.

You force the answer to be no with the "anything else." You could use RAID. You could just set up another ext3 partition and move some data over, then use symlinks to spread the dirs around.

Well I could use raid to just create a linear drive but that would require me to backup all the data and then put it back onto the system that's about a 5 - 7 hour procedure because of the amount of data. I seriously did not expect the drive to fill up as fast as it did since its a home server :P

Well, if you have that much data, you must surely have a back up for it, don't you? Sounds like it would be a catastrophic loss if you don't.

Make the back up, then worry about extending or moving partitions.

If you're going to go to all that trouble, why not convert it to btrfs - either in-place or on the new disk.
Then just add new disks as needed. No need for md or LVM.

Backups should still be accounted for regardles of what you do.

I think the theory is that you start with converting in place to RAID and then adding new hardware to extend the driver space becomes a quick procedure.

Yeah I have a external drive that I use for the backup data. LOL the problem there is that it is also only 1tb in size so what I was thinking of doing was putting that disk into the server and buying a 2tb drive to use as the backup.
