"Error - KWordQuiz 'The file is locked by another process'" pop-up window on Lubuntu 20.04

Hi all,

The "Error - KWordQuiz 'The file is locked by another process'" pop-up window shows up on files that were open when the system suddenly shut down due to a low battery. Even after a complete reboot, the files in question still cannot be opened. Even if I make a complete copy of the folder these files were in and try to open a file with the same name (but in a different folder) the same problem occurs. I have to create a copy of the file with a new name, I can then open it, however this becomes annoying as I can never remember which files can be opened and which cannot.

Any takers?

Many thanks in advance,

RM

Unlikely as it is, check if there are some stale .lock files still laying around. See LP#1576989 (unlikely because the bug was fixed in Qt 5.5.0, and Ubuntu 20.04 uses Qt 5.12.8).

Another thought. Parley uses the same data format as KWordQuiz. Can you open the files in question from within Parley? Perhaps, it would clear the lock?

Many thanks Shruggy for your reply. I appreciate your efforts.

I found the answer by simply searching around in the hidden files of my home folder.

Solution:

Go to /home/<username>/.local/share/stalefiles/kwordquiz ... In that folder, you have files with extremely long names that correspond to the locked files in question. You simply delete these files (I actually cut and pasted them into another folder just in case). And that's it!

Example of a long file name file:

BWV147-03-vocabulary.kvtmlzb7file_%2Fhome%2F<username>%2FDocuments%2FBachCantataStudyWordquizzes%2FBWV147nyE2S zb7

... which is the lock file name corresponding to the file BWV147-03-vocabulary.kvtml
