I would also just install pure Debian and Xfce or some other lightweight desktop..
Runs great on my PIII - 1 Ghz machine with 256 MB (and even better on my faster machines.. ) so you really shouldn't have an issue with your specs.

Why are you hot for Debian? Just curious. I didn't care for ubuntu either, but I have to admit I've never loaded Debian. Maybe I'll give it a shot this year.

With top I do not see anything resource hugging.
