Different Config Files

I have used both mandrake 8 and slackware 8 since I started learning linux at the beginning of this summer. When I was running Mandrake, to configure a mouse in X I had to edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. There also was a /etc/X11/XF86Config file. When I installed slackware and went to edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, it wasn't there. Only the /etc/X11/XF86Config was. Could anybody explain to me why this is and what the different functions they serve are? Thanks.

At a guess the -4 file is used by X11 4.xx and the other file is used by X11 3.xx so I guess that the different versions of X availalble on the default Mandrake build are compiled to use different config files. Unlike Slack which I assume are built to use the same config file.

cheers

Jamie...
