Default user name in Ubuntu 9.10 ???

OK
its not "ubuntu", "casper", Live session user or anyother I can find??

I'm trying to start a Xnest session as Ubuntu's default user
but when I do
Code:
su "name"
to go from root to user_name
it says no such user??

I have to find out what the default is?

is there a command like "whoami"
that will tell me the user name?

There is no other default user on the live cd. The way Ubuntu is setup is that there is one initial user, if you install to the system that user is the name given during setup. From there you would use sudo to perform root actions under that user. On the live cd the default account that is loaded is all that's available.

yes, but how to get into Xnest session as Ubuntu's default live session user which autologins into Desktop??

Problem is with e17, you must run the desktop initially to set it up, install themes etc

I cant do this as user because whats the user's name??

I have to change from root to ubuntu default user to start user desktop with Xnest..

Hi,

I'm not sure about this when it comes to LiveCD but logically if you have a running session you need to be running it as a 'user' or something. See what it tells you when you open a terminal and type:
Code:
id
If applicable that should show you the user that you are using.

Kind regards,

Eric

perhaps you need to create the user ?
you can look in
Quote:
/etc/passwd
or
/etc/shadow
to see if the user exist

OK
I think it makes the user during bootup
as it says something about
"creating live session user" at bootup..

Maybe I could just set up the root account as I dont need password
and then move all root's configs to
/etc/skel as this is where everythin in /home/ goes anyway??
You see, I need it to run as a real Ubuntu cd
not a remastersy,etc custiom job
no users, no passwords
just like real ubuntu

Repo I will see what /etc/password, etc ays too

OK
seems i was partially successful at getting around the name problem...
I simply set up root using Xnest
then copied .e and .mozilla and .config folders + gtkrc.2.0
to /etc/skel
hit with chown -R root:root /etc/skel
&& /etc/skel/.*

and then squashfs'd it and at boot I was autologined to e17!

But, it was the default e17 desktop
not my customizations
my themes and walpaers were available thru settings thing gui
so thats ok

I think it copies e17 stuff from /opt/e17/* at bootup too
so I'll mess around in there for a min...
