Welcome to LQ!!

The Ubuntu installer should have asked you to enter a username and password. If you somehow got past this step or forgot what you entered, then you can get into the system in several ways. The one I use most is to edit the GRUB commands during startup.

re-boot the machine.
When the Grub menu appears, hit any key to stop the count. If necesary, hit "escape" to get into a text menu.
Select Ubuntu, and hit "e" for edit.
Select the kernel line and hit "e" again.
Add the workd "single" (no quotes) at the end of the line.
Hit "enter" and then "b"

The computer will now boot into the root account with no password required. Now you can use the "adduser" command to add a new user.

The problem with this is that your new user will not have the same privileges as the superuser that Ubuntu creates. If you look in the /etc/passwd file, you might discover that you did create a user, after all. If so, you can create a new password by entering "passwd username"

If you get lost in all of this, you may find that re-installing is easier.....

I believe Ubuntu already has an entry in the GRUB menu for single user mode called "recovery mode." (I.e. I don't think you will need to do the editing shown above; just use the arrow keys to navigate and hit enter.) But I also think the GRUB menu is hidden by default which means to see it, you will have to press the escape key after the computer has finished its POST tests when you start or reboot the machine.
