Hi there,
I have been using suse linux for quite a while now and i'm not completely satisfied. I want to try out a nother distro.
I think debian is the way I want to go. But installing debian is quite a difficult (so I heard). The other day I read something about knoppix and that it could be used as a gui installer for debian. Does any one have expericance with knoppix that they might want to share with me?
Thanks
Debian is not hard to install. The only thing about it is that the installer is in text mode. The only thing I never did with debian was setting up partitions.Anything else is easy and explained pretty good during install.Don't worry about it.Getting some hardware going ok is sometimes another ballgame.
migrating distro's and still keeping your old software
I hope you guy's don't mind me asking what basicaly is a nother question. Is there some way that I can migrate to a nother distro and keep some my installed software without re-installing?
Not really. It's not worth the effort even to try anyway. What you want to keep are your config files in /etc.Installing the software doesn't take that long except if you compile everything from source. You could possibly take the binaries and just throw 'em in but since distros got the idea that everything should be in another place you are asking for big trouble and might also miss a couple of symlinks afterward.
