Cursor automatically moves down

Hello All,

I am dual booting Linux Mint 18 and Windows 8.1 on my HP AC026TX machine. Recently I have noticed an issue that occasionally my cursor automatically moves down and go to the bottom of the page; mostly when I am working on web browsers. I even unplugged the mouse but same problem occurred. I googled my problem but most of solutions talk about driver issues or virus infections, but what is unusual in my issue, is that, I am facing this issue in both OSs, even in grub menu it automatically selects my last option. I also read somewhere that I need to reset my PRAM. Is this related to any hardware issue? Please help me in resolving this issue as it is very frustrating. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks in Advance!

Hi:

Which one of these HP AC026TX models is yours?
There looks to be 2 or 3 different models.

https://www.google.com/search?client...+specification

Have you tried a wireless mouse?
(temporary fix)

-::-Maybe look in your System Settings and see if adjusting the touch-pad and mouse makes any difference.-::-

I don't know enough about resetting PRAM so I can't say it's hardware related.

You could try resetting your machine but I'd give that a lot of thought before doing it.
A hard reset may not solve hardware or software issue so I've found from reading a few articles online.
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03546603

http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/p...r_na-c01684768

You can also try looking in the mobo book for your HP and see if it can be reset from the BIOS. (reset to defaults)
If you don't have the mobo book it might be online in PDF form.

Another option would be to install a higher version of the kernel or re-compile the current kernel your using. I've studied the documentation for installing or re-compiling the kernel and it's not simple if you haven't done it before. If you would like to try that I suggest reading how to do it.

Probably the touchpad is acting up. You still have warranty on it?

Thanks Ztcoracat & Emerson for your replies,

My machine model details are available at http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04731368 .

I don't think it is mouse related issue because same thing (Page getting scrolled down to its bottom) happens when there is no mouse connected to the system. Even in Grub Menu, it automatically moves and selects the last option where only keyboard is supposed to work.

I will try to install latest kernel version. Can I just install the latest kernel from my package manager instead of compiling and installing it from source. If it doesn't work I will also Hard reset my device and I will let you know the outcome of it.

My one year warranty got expired on 23rd of August 2016 and just after 2-3 days, I started experiencing this issue so I am out of luck here.

Thanks again for helping me out.

If you paid using your credit card you may have 1 more year of warranty from your card issuer.

I paid using Internet Banking and I think I didn't have any such kind of offer while buying laptop otherwise I would have opted for it or maybe it is only available in selected countries.

since it "works" on windows, linux and even in grub I would say it is hardware related, or probably a bug in the bios. You can also try to enter bios setup to check it. And probably you can try to upgrade the bios. Also you may try to disable touchpad in bios, and use another keyboard...

This is not an offer, it is fine print of your credit card contract.

Yes, you can try that. If no joy from that than yeah try the hard reset.

IF you do decide to "upgrade the BIOS" like Pan suggests; make absolutely certain that the upgrade to your BIOS is specifically for your machine's make and model or it could render your machine into a paper weight.

I agree with the above comment that maybe the touchpad is messed up. You can "unplug" the touchpad with an xinput command that looks like this:

Code:
xinput set-prop 12 "Device Enabled" 0
Replace the number "12" with the id number of your touchpad. You can get a list of xinput id numbers by typing the command "xinput".

If the touchpad is faulty, then this command will eliminate the undesired symptoms. At that point, you can physically unplug the touchpad to solve the problem in Windows also. Or you can live with the problem in Windows, while tweaking the xinput settings in Linux to work around the problem while still giving you a partially functional touchpad. Basically, xinput offers a wide variety of methods to scroll, as well as ways to simply filter out scroll events entirely. I'll bet that you can get an alternative method of scrolling to work reliably, albeit you'll have to get used to a different method of scrolling (for instance, circular motions instead of two fingered drag).

I'd be interested to know if our senior member, IsaacKuo's instruction works for you.
Do tell if it does.

Thanks guys for your replies,

So far, I have upgraded my kernel and I have disabled touchpad from "Touchpad Settings" option(I hope that it produces the same result as xinput does). As the issue was occurring approximately once in 1 or 2 days, I am still waiting to know if it has resolved my issue or not, though in Grub menu it still selects my last option.

Arrow keys work, that how I have been able to boot Mint in recent time.

Unfortunately disabling touchpad didn't work for me. As I am bit scared of upgrading BIOS, I think hard reset is my only option.
