CTR-ALT-F1 kills X server

Hello,
When one of my users has a problem like a file ownership problem or can't eject a CD, I used to just CTR-ALT-F1 to change to a text terminal, log in, and fix it.

However, I have this one FC3 box that always kills the X server when I do this. I go to the F1 (or whichever one is open) terminal and fix whatever needs fixing. When I go back to CTR-ALT-F7 it deposits me at the users original terminal with a lot of errors on how things terminated unexpectedly with the X server crash.

I've been doing this for years and this is the first time I've seen this behavior.

Any ideas where to start?

Thanks,
A

Unfortunately, no. The system is not on any externally acessible-network (firewall security reasons). I will see about dumping the messages to a floppy and copying them here.

I have seen this issue on certain machines and the solution was to comment out the load dri line in /etc/X11/xorg.conf file
