Linux newb here, with a dedicated to server to look after.... I know, I know...

I need to create a couple of FTP users, and need a bit of help. Our hosting uses Plesk which gives us one FTP user per domain.
Basically these new users should be able to read and write files, having no delete file or create/delete directories perm's.

I've read about useradd , and editing etc/passwd to give them a dummy shell. Or use useradd -s I think. Where I need help is (and please forgive my ignorance):

1) useradd - this is a generic 'create user' command right? So how do I enable the users to be FTP users.

2) How do I set/limit their FTP permissions

Indeed generic. Depending on the configuration of the FTP server (which one do you use?) they are either enabled or disabled by default.

I don't know; if you can write files, you can overwrite them as well which basically means that you can delete them as well (overwriting with an empty file is very similar to deleting).

Note: make sure that the users are jailed so they can not access the rest of the filesystem.

Thanks Wim. I'm trying to find out what FTP server is running at the mo'.

On (2), I'd just assumed it was poss because I've got FileZilla server running locally, which has specific allow/deny options for each of file read, write, delete, and also directory make, delete and list. Will find out what the server is and go from there.

Server is ProFTP, I'm on the way to figuring out the config to do the permissions thing. Looking OK so far.
