Compile a new kernel

I compiled a new kernel for Slackware-Current (from kernel.org). I notice that my when I boot
1. The font is large fonts
2. There is no fancy header at the top of my screen (penguin in top left of screen, etc.)
3. In general it is ugly.

My question is... is there a way to get this stuff to show up?

You left out framebuffering support.. probably gonna have to start all over with your kernel config..

I tried compiling various options under... Device Drivers -> Graphics Support -> Support for frame buffer devices... am I way off on this one?
