Unhappy Cannot login, no password prompt!

Hi, I recently installed Ubuntu 7.04 and I am having some weird problems logging in. In order to login to my machine, I need to go through the following steps (when booting from cold):

1. Login prompt displayed but when I enter my username or "root" I just get another login prompt. It never asks for a password.
2. Reboot via reset button.
3. Now I get login prompt and password prompt displayed ok but no passwords work. The system never sais invalid password, just displays the login prompt again (very quickly).
4. Reboot via reset button.
5. Login, password, system displays Ubuntu login banner with copyrights etc but then kicks me back to the login prompt again.
6. Reboot via reset button
7. Works.

I haven't been able to see anything useful in the logs either. If it helps, my /home/ is mounted on my second drive and the rest is on my first drive.

Any ideas?

Wow, I've never heard of that. 3 power resets and you get in.

Has it always done this? If so, I would think that something got corrupted during the installation. If you burned install disc(s) from ISO file(s), and if there are MD5SUMs to check against, verify the downloaded ISO against the MD5SUM to ensure you got a good download.
