Can't dial with gnome-ppp

Gnome has always been my favourite desktop environment. However I have never been able to dial in with gnome-ppp on any distro, with any version of the program. As soon as I click connect, I get the error message "The pppd daemon died unexpectedly".

Using KDE tools I have never had this problem. Both kinternet, and kppp function perfectly (once I change the initialization to ATZ1) and always have.

The problem is that I've just done a Morphix hard drive install (which seems to be debian) using the Gnome 2.4 Morphix CD, so I don't have the option of the KDE tools any more and I can't get online to download them.

Why is this particular dialer different? Anybody know why it wont work, or how I can fix it? Or maybe some alternative I can use?

Thanks.

" Or maybe some alternative I can use?"

You could try wvdial if you have that handy.

Thanks, but I already tried that. It isn't installed.

I also tried just setting it up with pppconfig, but the same problem. I've only ever been able to dial in successfully with KDE tools. I thought of downloading kppp (and whatever it depends on) from my Windows partition or something, and then installing it that way. But I'm not sure if thats possible. I havent had much debian experiance. Anybody?
