Burning Centoo woes - HELP!!

For about 5 months now, I have been trying to get Linux with a 2.6.10 kernel installed and have failed at every turn. I never knew how much of an undertaking this would be.

I started with Redhat 9.0. At one point, I managed to get Kernel 2.6 installed but it wouldn't load a customer kernel module. I tried reinstalling and then I couldn't get the machine to boot. I then tried Fedora and was unsuccessfull. I was finally recommended Centoo. I need to load specifically a Redhat OS with kernel 2.6.10 because some proprietary software I need to install requires it. Someone from LinuxForums suggested Centoo.

I downloaded all Centoo kerenl 2.6.10 ISOs. I then burnt them to a CD.

All was looking well. I booted up with the first disk. After configuring the partitions I then hit "next" after configuring the ethernet cards/network. At that point I got a disk error and all I could do was reboot. When I rebooted, I got disk error 32, AX=4280, drive 9F Boot failed: press a key to rety. Of course....."nothing".

I then tried to burn the ISO again on a new disk but at a slower speed but my burner software never fully burns the CD (only partially) and the LED on my CD burner keeps flashing. I can't eject the CD so I literally have to pry it open. I am fuming. Why can't I negotiate this? I then tried another CD, burned the ISO at X4 instead of "maximum", and chaged the option "disk at once", to "track at once" but the same thing keeps happening. It seems fairly obvious that I will not be able to burn the ISOs but what options does that leave me for getiing Centoo installed??? Is there a way that I could install Cento from windows via some type of auto installer via the insternet? if not, why can't I successfully get the ISOs burned??

What is even more puzzling is the fact that the first time I burned the ISOs, all 4 ISOs were successfully burned to 4 different CDs. Now that I want to retry burning (with different options config'd), I can't burn them at all. The burning software says it's writing, I see the CD burner LED light flashing, but it just hangs and never completes the process. Then I have to hit eject 50 times and try prying my CD door open just to get it to let go of the CD.

I know I can't walk into the store and buy Centoo kernel 2.6.10....so what the %#$@ do I do? Anyone have ideas....Is this a hopeless cause? Or should I resign to the fact that Windows succeeds when Linux won't...

All help is appreciated!

Question

What OS are you using to burn the Centoo CDs?

What burning software are you using?

Have you tried burning the ISO's on another computer? Maybe have a friend burn them for you?

Are you sure your ISO's are good? Did you do a MD5 Sum check on them?

Try burning something else.... Does THAT cd work?

What proprietary software are you trying to use that requires 2.6.10 kernel?

Thanks.

I downloaded and checksum'd the ISOs on to Win2k. Does my CD burner work?? How can I tell. Burning CDs are ALWAYS hit or miss. It's very frstrating...Everytime I have a problem burning a CD...I try to download a different burner software...Sometimes it works...other times it doesn't....Sometimes, Windows tells me I have no CD inserted when I clearly do!!?! I can't tell if my cheap CD burner is just that crappy or what!?!? I even tried buying different CD-RW to see if they were the cause. I now use memorex. When I burn the CD, I do see the folders and files on it.

I use software called ISO Magic....I have tried numerous shareware burners also. I9 wish I could just by Centoo in a store....People praise Linux....Why?? I started using Linux in 2000. I hate Linux.....everything you ever want to do requires man page reading, config changes, hitting ppl up on Forums like this, hours of blood sweat and tears and when it's all said and done???? MAYBE you got your particular problem solved....just to be greeted by more! There's no telling if any software or hardware you install will work....and when it does work it never is complete without fault. Linux might be a great concept (free) but I would gladly pay even 500 dollars for an OS that I know will work!! But.... I am a slave to the forces that act upon me. If I want to use this software...I need Linux...and I need 2.6 kernel. If I don't spend God knows how many hours trying figure it out, then I just will do without....

BTW, sorry about the Drama...I have been laboring over this for a very very long time. Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated...

You didnt answer all my Q's

Hey man,
Answer all of my questions please. Then I will be able to help you. WHAT PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE DO YOU SPEAK OF???

CD burning is never hit and miss if you have the proper setup. I haven't gotten a coaster because of bad hardware in over 3 years.

You have to be able to get an ISO burning straight before you can even begin to think of "simple" concepts in Linux. Burning an ISO to a CD is one of the easiest things that one can do to begin their journey. I praise most versions of Nero for Windows, if that is what you seek. Why don't you try booting a version of Knoppix (3.8 or 3.9), Whoppix, or Live SuSe to see if your hardware even works properly. If the live CD doesn't work, then you may have bad hardware issues altogether.

Can you not use a version of Fedora? I personally like 2 and 4, not so much 3. If i remember correctly Fedora 2 comes with the 2.6 kernel, but you can always re-compile.

Get back to me. I will look at your other posts in the meantime to see what you have played with in the past. To answer your question about "why" to use Linux..... If you are asking me that... or anyone else that uses it.... you shouldn't be using it at all to be honest. Read up on the origin of the "free" operating system, the GNU GPL, Linus Torvalds, and other open source projects. Then you will see that the community is truly a great one and the power of Linux is unprecedented.

~Ryan

P.S. I run Gentoo. It's a hand compiled fully BY HAND... POWERFUL.. distro. Look into some doccumentation on that when you get bored.

oK. I also have NERO. It came with my CD burner. I need to make a "bootable CD". When I choose the bootable CD option it only gives me the option to make a bootable floppy disk! I am so frustrated. I can burn data and anything else on Nero but it doesn't give me the option to make a bootable CD!?!? Could this be because I have the Express version of NERO??

I keep trying this other ISO Burner called ISO Ultra blah (can't remember it's name). It has the option to make a bootable CD. I try to do this, it starts burning and then 1/3 of the way it starts giving me read errors, so it never completes the process.

Maybe I need a more sophisticated burner software....maybe NERO has one that allows you to make bootable CDs. Like I said, I have NERO express and when I choose the option "make bootable CD", it goes to the next screen and has a dropdown choice with the A: drive (floopy) already selected. It doesn't give me a d: drive (cd-rw) option to choose so HELP! HEEEEEEELP!!!

I can't help you....

Sorry Man,

You have ignored my questions, and I can't respond to someone who ignores me. This thread is done.

what are ya? Some kind of a _ _ hole? Geesh......What did you want to know?? What kind of proprietary software I was speaking of?? Why?!?!?.....it doesn't even matter. My questions concerned the making of a bootable CD, not anything else. The software is called OmniBus if you really must know...Now how about you answer my questions before I come over there and....AND!! Never mind....

Just off hand, sounds like your drive or blanks are bad. Rather than pry the cd drive open, just reboot. Wouldn't be surprised if it isn't damaged now.

Check out the FTP install or order a set for $10.00 here;

2.6-<latest>
Do "yum update" after install for all patches.
