booting error: Kernel Panic: vfs: unable to mount root fs on 01:01

This happens when I try booting the a linux installation no matter what distribution I try:

Kernel Panic: vfs: unable to mount root fs on 01:01

Then it just stops.

What are some possible causes/how can I fix it?

The kernel can't mount your root filesystem.

You need to be sure that when you install linux, that you slect the right type of file system that is on the disk. If you select a different type then be sure to format it otherwise it won't work.

I haven't installed on that computer yet, the problem is that I can't get the installer booted.
