Unhappy kernel panic VFS: unable to mount root

My new kernel (2.5.2) doesn't work The message is:

kmod : failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -h nls_iso8859-i, errno = 2
kernel panic : VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:05

I am using a reiser filesystem, with reiserfsprogs ver 3.6.4. (and all my other program versions meet the Changes reqs). I couldn't find a reiser option under `make config`, so I'm presuming I shouldn't need it(?) I also executed `make modules` and `make modules_install` after I had booted the system and it failed, (I went back to my old version and tried them out, still didn't work) I then used `make install` which presumably just installs the kernel in /boot and updates lilo, which I was doing by hand before. /dev/hda5 is my root partition. Has anyone got any clues as to what might be happening?

thanks,
Dave.

Every 2.5 kernel is beta ....

That said, you should at least use more
recent versions.... current is 2.5.69...

Cheers,
Tink
