Boot failure

Hi all,
Hope this is the right forum for this question. I have the following problem. I'm setting up a Linux system using an Epia mini-itx mainboard (via chipset, Award Bios) aside from the mainboard, which has everything embedded (ethernet, graphics, sound), the box contains a 20GB Maxtor hard drive and an old DVD/CD-RW combo drive (which will be disconnected as soon as the install is finished) and 192MB PC100 SDRam. My problem is as follows:
- When I boot with Lilo (graphic or text) or with Grub (text) the 'choose system to boot' dialog appears, after I select which image to boot, the system states (lilo) 'loading linux.....' 'bios data check successful' and then gives a Post bleep and restarts.
- I can boot the system using a Knoppix bootable cd and work in linux.
- I can install Windows 2000 on the system and boot from the hard drive (I just choose not to

So basically I would diagnose my hardware as OK, except for the problem that I can't boot Linux, and I can't seem to find anyone with this sort of booting trouble anywhere.

Other information that might be useful:
- I tried setting the harddisk from CHS to LBA mode in the BIOS
- I'm using Mandrake 10.1 community
- I tried installing lilo in the mbr as well as on the root partition, neither place helped (grub was only installed in the mbr)
- I do not know if there is any way to get a log of the boot, considering the fact that it fails before it has a real chance to mount my drives, I guess it won't be there, but if anyone knows where I can find (or how I can generate) a bootlog file for lilo I would be much obliged.

Hope someone can help me.
Cheer,
Merijn

No sorry, it reminds me of the great 'feature' on Windows XP that automatically restarts the computer at a blue screen. As soon as the 'bios data check successful' message comes on the screen I hear the drives stutter, followed by the POST bleep and the BIOS splash.

Exact thing is happening to me after updating my BIOS. For the life of me I don't know what could be wrong. The install CD's won't even run on my system. It gets to the 'bios data check successful' 'booting kernel', and the system restarts. I'm dying in the Windows world while looking for solutions lol.

I have to agree with you that it is rather painful to get the 'Windows Experience' forced on me again, especially considering they actually have a 'feature' that Linux fails to deliver (dress warmly ladies and gentlemen, hell HAS frozen over).
Could you give me the specs of the system involved Sylant_Daemon, perhaps it will give us (or someone else) a clue.
