Audio Streaming Server?

Hey all,

I host an FTP server for djforums.com at ftp://osrv.serveftp.com so users can upload their mixes for people to hear. Then one guy said it would be really cool to have an audio streaming server so people could hear the mixes streamed rather than having to download them to listen to them (which is usually 70MB+). So what kind of software would I need to serve this kind of thing? Do you think my cable connection would hold up streams? I'm looking for the ability to stream something on demand rather than having a playlist. You know, like those mp3 sites, for example, ic-musicmedia.com and mp3.com when it was around.

Thank you all very much, I can't even say how helpful this forum is. Linuxquestions.org wouldn't exist without all of you.

Max

the only thing that i can think of is icecast.
http://icecast.org/
i don't know if you can just set it up for people to click on something and then play it, but from what i've read in their docs, you should be able to.

what about just having a .m3u file that points to each persons mix and then when someone clicks on it they can listen to it instead of having to download it. that would make the most sense. it would be like the sites that you go to with background audio on them.

Wow - those are both really good pieces of software! I tried installing icecast last night with no luck. It said I needed curl. So I went and downloaded it, but the install was a mess. I'm gonna see what zina can do, looks ideal.
