Got back about two months ago but have been around a bit deciding where to live until we finally decided that Wellington seemed cool and there seemed to be some work available as well.
Now I had best be off and try to find out a little about AIX so I donīt look like a complete idiot... like if they ask me if I know what it is
Btw, I just did another search on AS/400 (it's been
many years that I last sw one) and it appears that
there's something called OS/400 as well these days.
Not sure whether that's just a name-change or really
something new, though. :/
Os400 is an operating system and the As400 is/was a midrange server as of 1999
Does that mean that its quite old hardware?? Unless I have just completely confused myself That would explain the fact I canīt find it on the IBM page.
Well IBM have changed the name from AS400 to "iSeries". Some of the hardware might be old, but they update the operating system regularly - and the larger machines just make the eyes boggle. These machines have been known to survive explosions and floods.
Just type iSeries into the address bar in Firefox and you'll get a page all about them. Its nice to know you have them down there... I could come looking for work soon.
[Edit: by the way, the operating system is different from Unix... though you can run Unix command shells. But OS400 is in a league of its own.]
You've pretty much got the scoop already, but yes the AS/400 became the iSeries, and recently was renamed to i5. Rock solid systems. As looseCannon's story demonstrates, each system has its place. A Linux/UNIX box wouldn't be well suited to run my iSeries apps, and to some extent the reverse is true. Although the iSeries does a good job of doing a lot of different things. I'm a sysadmin on the iSeries but just started picking up some Linux, as we will be running Linux in a partition on one of our iSeries boxes.
If you have any specific questions IM me, although I'll be away next week.
