Artwork on console and bootsplash appears "fuzzy"

My screen appears "fuzzy" when it is in the console and during startup and shutdown.

This fuzzy-ness appears on the images of the graphical bootsplash and on the image underneath the text in the console. It does not appear on the graphical bootloader screen or anywhere else. It is very similar to the effect of having a low-quality JPEG image with lots of solid-color areas. Scroll down to the pictures of the butterflies on this page for an example (although it is far worse on my screen).

I should mention that this problem appears in both SUSE and Mandriva 10 LE with default artwork.

I may have made some progress in solving this problem already, but I am stuck. I the directory called /usr/share/bootsplash/themes/Mandrakelinux, I have found the images used during boot. If I load these images in an image viewing application, they appear fuzzy. I thought that I could fix this problem, by replacing them with another image with better quality. Strangely enough, changing the images in this directory had not effect on the bootsplash seen during startup or shutdown. Installing some other bootsplash themes didn't help, because those have the fuzzy appearance also.
