Any way to keep a remote terminal running even when you quit your client program?

(Ok, that wasn't my best attempt at clear subject authorship...)

Let's say that I want to:
  • log on remotely to my Linux (or OSX) server via SSH using my Windows PC and PuTTY; then
  • start a program that's going to take a long time to finish, like using apt (or fink on a Mac) to install something; then
  • turn off PuTTY and walk away, leaving apt (or whatever) wtill running on the server; then
  • log back in a little later to the SAME SESSION on the server to check up on my progress.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks in advance!!!

ssh into your Linux/OSX box, then from your terminal, launch:

screen

Disconnect without logging out, that keeps your terminal session alive.

When you reconnect, type:

screen -r

Excellent. I love it when a plan comes together.
