Annoying Ticking Noise

I don't recall having this problem yesterday, but I installed some media programs today (xine, ogle, plugins, ...) and now there is the quiet ticking noise in the backgound. It clicks precisely every second. When I have music playing you can only notice it between songs because it is just lound enought to be heard. Does anyone have any idea how to find out what this might be? Is there any way to see what programs are accessing the sound card? Is there a system clock that clicks/ticks every second? Thanks! (FC2)
