I just installed slackware 8.0 today and I am a first time linux user. javascript:smilie(%27%3Anewbie%3A%27)
I have an ESS ALLEGRO sound card and despratly would like to get it working. I saw one place that told me to just set it up using soundblaster_16 but I have no clue how to do THAT either
ANY help would be MUCH appriciated

First stop, which ususally fixes most soundcards, is to run sndconfig. if that fails, there's ALSA drivers and such like to investigate. If it can runas an sb16 sndconfig should fix it i guess.
Turns out slackware does not use sndconfig... I'm not THAT stupid
My card is an ES1988 ESS Allegro
I have searched the world over looking for a download but every link I find ends up being dead.....
I have been at this for about 20 hours now and about ready to distroy anything that resembles a computer
I got the ALSA dirvers from www.alsa-project.org. They have drivers for many sound cards. ESS 1988 is one of them. Compiling was a pain, but worth it when it worked. The help file is pretty good. A word of caution, don't cut corners in the installation, it breaks easy!
