Unhappy Alcatel SpeedTouch usb

Is there anyone out there that has tried the SpeedTouch usb dsl modem with Mandrake 8.1? Kernel version 2.4.8 I have tried everything from every "how to" on the net with no luck. I'm not the greatest with linux, but I do know how to compile a kernel. I can't understand why the os gives an option to use this modem as a connection for the internet, and then you have to go through 250 pages of how-to's to be able to TRY to get the thing to work. Does the 2.4.8 kernel require any of the patches that the most popular how-to's are speaking of...ie pppoa, and pppoe? Is there a module out there that can be installed that doesn't require a kernel recompile? I think the o/s is great, but this will be the "show stopper" on using it as a primary o/s. I've read to do a "make" and "make install" for the Alcatel management software, and then I've read just to copy the mgmt.o into the /usr/share/speedtouch dir. What's the right approach? At any rate, I've tried both and neither work. I also tried to load the speedtouch driver from http://sourceforge.net with the latest version of sarlib....to no avail. Gives errors trying to load into 2.4.8 kernel source. Any contributions to the resolution of this would be greatly appreciated....then I will write a "how-to" for the rest of us with this problem.

Talking DShell

Hello!

I used the same modem for almost 6 months. with MY DUAL BOOT Linux-Windows. The only reason I put windows was this modem, because at that time there was NO DRIVER; only speculations that there would be one some time in the near future.

well, you can imagine how ecstatic I was when I downloded the Driver. But in a minute I realised that the driver should be DRIVERSSSS.

I welcomed myself to the wonderful world of LINUX.

I did everything right, basicly all is installation in an order and kernel compilation a few times. I got two green lights on the modem, and then suddenly the computer froze. It keeped freezing again ang again. No internet...

I said that's it. I give up...

After a month there was an extensive HOW-TO. A warning caught my eye: IF YOU DONT DISABLE "SMP motherboard" IN THE KERNEL CONFIG, THE SYSTEM WILL FREEZE WHEN MODEM STARTS OPERATING

Too late, my modem was gone already...

It is these little details. Don't give up! You'll get it at the end. When you get it, please remember me and others who suffered a great deal just to make this green bastard work!!
