Slow computer as game server??

need to set up a game server (Quake 4) on my LAN and I had an old machine setting around: http://www.epinions.com/S0678816-eto...~latest_prices

Would this work as a game server? I doubt it would work, because the minimum system requirements for quake4 are 2GHz cpu and 512MB ram, but its going to be a server and not play the game. I dont need it to be great but I need it to work with low pings and no lock-ups.

If it would work, is there a way I can remotley turn it off and on? I have heard of a magic packet thing but I dont know much about it.

Thanks

This should be very fine as a server for shooters - but try not to use it for strategy games It might give it a little pepper if you put in some more memory but try it as it is first. If you boot into console (= don't use a gui!) you might even have enough free ram.

For the turning off: You can easily turn the quake server on and off over ssh. You can probably even do that via the game console but with ssh you can also turn the wholel box off.

I got it set up and its working just fine for 2 players. For some reason it says it can only support 2566MB memory, but I have 384 in there and it works. and no I didnt install GUI.

Is there a way to copy files to it from windows (putty)?

I have tried shutting it off over ssh but it wont powerdown, am I using the qrong command? #shutdown -h -t now

Thanks for the reply!

That probably comes from your mainboard accepting same size modules only, therefore you could remove the 128er.

If putty is an ssh program, yes

The command is right but you probably don't have power management running. Try
$ modprobe apm
or
$ acpid
and see if it works then.

Edit: An alternative to shutdown -h... would be halt btw
