My computer hangs under game loads.

I built a computer a few weeks ago with an AMD64 chip, Asus Board, 1 gig of memory and a 256mb g-force 5700 (I think).

The computer generally works great, in every way it stomps my 3.2 P4 in speed. Even moving large files in a fraction of the time. I really love it. The problem is that it hangs durring games and briefly at start up.

I can't duplicate it in Linux because I have no games on Linux but it doesn't hang at start up when I'm in Linux.

I've run all kinds of hardware tests on memory, graphics card, processor, board..etc and they all come back fine.

It has crashed back to Windows twice and I got a message about the graphics card couldn't write properly but checking nvidia for the updated drivers, I looked at their knowledge base and it says it could be other problems that Windows is reporting as the graphics card.

I'll get a new card if I have to but I don't want to waste the money if not necessary.

Any thoughts, really irritating for a game to hang every few minutes.

By the way, the games it hangs the most on are HL2 and Tony Hawk pro skater 4.

Any other applications running?
Scanned for spyware/viruses?

Have you tryed changing settings in the games? lower resolution?
Have you ran DXDIAG? Is DirectX the latest version.

Other than driver updates I would try swapping the card if the rest doesn't help.

OK, I have scanned for viruses/worms and Spyware/adware.

No other applications running, even eliminated some of the ones that run at startup.

I have also adjusted setting well below the 'recommended' setting that the games sets based on my hardware.

Forgot about DXDIAG.. never remember that one for some reason but yes DirectX is the latest.

Are there any intensive diagnostic tools I can run in Linux that may give me more info?

I had the same problem a while back when I first built my machine. After a lot of headaches and research I found that it was the drivers that I was using. The OEM drivers from nVidia are just plain useless when you need to support gfx intensive games/programs. I would recommend going to this site and getting your drivers.
