Unusual Ut2k4 performance.

I just installed ut2k4 and tried to play a 1 v 1 deathmatch. How ever it was unplayable because of the performance. My fps kept going from 125 fps to something extremely low. I was averaging 25 fps, but it was nothing near constant. I have played wolfenstein et and had no problems with performance.

System Specs:
Amd Athlon 2500
Radeon 9600xt
768Mb ram
onboard sound AC97
80GB hard drive.

Anyone know what may be wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Do you have the latest vid card drivers?

I forget if UT2k4 precaches by default, but if theer's a way to turn that on, maybe that would help.
