You will need an open gl version of the quake client, Quakeforge is a good choice http://www.quakeforge.net/ .

The howto here http://webpages.mr.net/bobz/howto/ has instructions on extracting the game data files.

Lastly, you will need to setup your system with a 3D card and appropriate drivers to enable accelerated direct rendering.

check out the Quake Wiki (which I found thanks to one the links/hints in this thread - thanks guys!), it's got a lot of info on all things Quake.

nexuiz is pretty neat stuff btw! (found it through the wiki, downloaded it, and it plays right out of the box, and looks pretty damn slick too, if I do say so myself, considering it's origins).

Nexuiz ROCKS !!!

Thanks for the replies ... but i've put the original Quake on the back burner for now. I downloaded Nexuiz 2.1 last night.. and although its a little resource intensive for what it is it's a great game that has the feel of Q1 with better gfx (the bloom effect is great!!) I wouldn't say it's choppy but it does pause briefly every few seconds (i've read it has to do with the high poly count on the characters running on an older engine)

I found the game on the open source game list wiki found here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_open_source_games

CHeck it out !!

Edit: Found out what the stuttering issue was... Mouse filter was OFF (man I feel dumb).. runs smooth as silk now !!!
